We all have a disagreement with someone at times, and sometimes we can go as far as spreading lies in hopes of bringing that person shame. No matter if your behind a keyboard, in a work place, or even in a virtual world, you will always have people who either disagree with you as a person, your likes, or the people you associate with. When you watch the news today you hear about one news outlet stating one fact while another rebuts the fact. The same can be said about Second Life and the Antagonizing SLSECRETS site.
There will always be people who loves to be a part of the drama. They strive to stir up the already damaging false claim submitted on someone for the sole purpose of causing intentional harm. You can respond with a rebuttal, however, the damage has already begun. The site owner states once a post has already been posted it will NOT be removed. They also state that this is Second Life, and you are just an avatar without rights and you are not protected by any laws.
Let us educate SLSECRETS shall we?
Harassment and Cyberbullying IS a Crime
The crime of harassment (which can include stalking, hate crimes, and cyberbullying) occurs when one person acts in a way designed to annoy, provoke, threaten, or otherwise cause another person emotional distress.
Don’t be a troll
Yes. We know. The online world is chock-a-block full of people calling other people fat, stupid, ugly etc. But, beside the obvious point that THIS IS MEAN, harassing someone online (known as ‘trolling’) is legally shady, too.
You CAN be CHARGED with a Crime when you have caused the following:
Grossly offensive Comments
SLSECRETS is a site designed with one sole purpose, to entice and cause harm to individuals (yes, behind every avatar is a PERSON). They allow others to submit their lies without merit or proof, then the site owner adds their own touch to the post and picture that is attached to the post. The site goal is to promote menacing behavior, while allowing degrading and grossly offensive comments to be made on the victim. Sadly, those who have been singled out on this site are unaware of such acts until it is too late.
Regarding the site owners remark: You are just an avatar without rights and you are not protected by any laws. You may want to educate yourself on The Communications Act 2003 that says anything published that is ‘menacing’ – and therefore likely to upset an average person – could be an offence. For those who have been degraded and caused harm on this site, there are laws that protect you even behind an avatar.
